Local organisations support The Green Shed

Barry Watts, coordinator of The Green Shed, which is based at Castle Gardens in Sherborne and run by Tricuro, recently thanked the organisations which continue to support The Green Shed, by inviting them to see how their generous donations help provide work for adults with learning difficulties.

Among those in attendance was Judy Pyke (front right), from Bramleys, a volunteer-run charity, which raises money from event catering and donated £1,000 to The Green Shed this year.

Other supporters included Monica Atkinson (front left) from Sherborne Inner Wheel and Chris Stevens (above, front centre) from The FOLD, which is a registered charity offering support and innovative projects for people with learning disabilities who live in North Dorset. The FOLD helps fund refreshments for The Green Shed service-users, as well as new equipment and building repairs.

Brian and Jenny Abbey (back, centre), from Abbey Décor in Sherborne, were also thanked by for their generous support, having donated power tools used at The Green Shed.

Mike Burks (back, centre left), managing director of Castle Gardens where The Green Shed is based, was also in attendance. Castle Gardens sells items made at The Green Shed at the garden centre, including kindling that is produced from recycled materials.

Barry explains;

“I am extremely grateful for all the support and kind donations from these organisations and I really want their generosity to be recognised. It was such a boost to receive £1,000 from Bramleys this year, and the continued support from The FOLD, Castle Gardens and Abbey Décor is invaluable to The Green Shed.”

The Green Shed, which opened in October 2010 and was part-funded by local body Chalk + Cheese, is situated in an area at the rear of Castle Gardens in Sherborne, Dorset. It was established after the Whitehouse Resource Centre in Sherborne closed and currently opens four days a week, during which time adults with learning difficulties are able to use the workshop to further develop community recycling projects, including wood recycling, knitting and making a variety of wooden items. The atmosphere at The Green Shed has developed into a place where people feel instantly at home and included – work, companionship and support are at the core of this successful community project.
