Show-stopping turn out for Brimsmore’s Cake Off

Lesley Waters

On Tuesday 24 May, Lesley Waters, TV chef and owner of Lesley Waters Cookery School in Halstock, judged 26 cakes at Brimsmore Gardens’ Cake Off in Yeovil, which was held in The Apple Tree Restaurant. Part of a special Summer Tea Party at the garden centre, the baking competition raised £167 for Yeovil Community Arts Association (YCAA), a local charity run by volunteers who organise the international writing competition, the Yeovil Literary Prize.

The winner of each category was presented with a certificate and commemorative wooden spoon, with the overall champion receiving a hand painted winner’s plate by Elizabeth Clark Designs.

Cake Off winners:

Celebration Cake: Ceri Owen’s Caramel and Chocolate Ombre Cake

Afternoon Tea Cake: Faye Edmondson’s Raspberry and Peach Crumble Cake

Batches and Tray Bakes: Elaine Sharp’s Whisky and Fig Brownies

Overall Winner: Ceri Owen’s Caramel and Chocolate Ombre Cake

Cath Collins, group food manager at The Gardens Group, explains;

“The Brimsmore Cake Off was a fantastic event and the standard of home baking was incredibly high, with innovative decoration, inspiring flavour combinations and some truly exquisite classics. The Apple Tree Restaurant was full of bakers and onlookers eagerly anticipating Lesley’s verdict and we are delighted to have helped raise awareness and money for the YCAA, which does such valuable work in our community. We would like to say a huge thank you to Lesley Waters for taking the time to judge our Cake Off and helping to make the event such a great success.”
